Croagh Patrick, is a place of pilgrimage in Ireland today. It is said that Saint Patrick himself spent forty days fasting and praying on the mountains summit. Many pilgrims today will make the trek barefoot as an act of penance.
Traveling up to high places to meet God is a common theme throughout the bible and consequently throughout the history of the faithful of the church. Where faith and geology meet is a profound thing to contemplate. I love how carnal our theology is. I love that there are physical places we can travel to have an encounter with God. At the same time our interior landscape offers the same amount of wonder on a completely different scale. We can encounter God in the high and low places of our very lives.
Just please, Jesus, may we all feel safe enough to actually travel to Croagh Patrick in Mayo Ireland, someday soon!
