When approached by a priest for a commission of a Jesus icon that was more tender than ones he had seen I took this as a great challenge! There is a reason for icons not showing much emotion. For one, when we enter a church we ourselves are always fluctuating with the circumstances of our lives and our emotions follow suit. Icons can meet us in their constancy of expression regardless of how we are feeling. So, I was not about to create an icon face that was overflowing with joy, should one be having a hard day and need some empathy. But, could I add some tenderness without crossing a line? I think I did. The priest was moved by my portrayal of Christ and I hope you will be as well. He is the ONE who fills us with joy, afterall.
The "OWN" in his halo stand for "I AM". The "IC XC" stand for "Jesus Christ" in Greek. The colors of his robes mean that he was born divine and clothed in humanity. The flow of his hair and his beard always represent the flow of the life giving waters.
